How IPL actually works, explained simply

Quick answer: IPL sends gentle pulses of light into the pigment in your hair root. That pigment turns the light into heat, the heat disables the follicle's ability to grow hair, and after enough repeat sessions the follicle mostly stops. It needs dark hair and lighter skin because the light has to find the pigment in the hair, not your skin.

The one idea behind all of it

Every hair on your body grows from a follicle, a tiny factory under the skin. Shaving, waxing, and creams all deal with the hair you can see. They never touch the factory, so it keeps producing. IPL is different because it aims past the hair and at the factory itself.

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. The handset flashes a broad spectrum of light onto the skin. That light is drawn to melanin, the pigment that makes hair dark. When the pulse hits a hair, the pigment absorbs the light and converts it into heat, the same way a black shirt gets hotter in the sun than a white one.

Why repetition is the whole game

A single flash does not end a follicle. Hair grows in cycles, and only the follicles that are in their active growth phase at the moment of the flash absorb enough energy to be affected. At any given time, that is only a fraction of the hair in an area.

This is why the schedule matters more than the device. Doing three short sessions a week for the first month means you catch different follicles in their active phase across sessions. Miss the schedule and you simply give the follicles you skipped a full cycle to recover. Consistency is not a suggestion, it is the mechanism.

  • Weeks 1 to 3: the first affected follicles slow down. Regrowth comes in finer and softer.
  • Weeks 4 to 8: you have now caught most follicles at least once. Bare patches appear and spread.
  • Weeks 8 to 12: smooth becomes the default. A single weekly session keeps it that way.

Why it works for some people and not others

The whole method depends on contrast: dark pigment in the hair against lighter skin around it. That contrast is what lets the light find the follicle instead of scattering into the skin.

  • Best results: light to medium skin with dark brown or black hair. Maximum contrast, maximum effect.
  • Gentler results: medium deep skin. Start on the lowest setting and patch test, because there is less contrast to work with.
  • Not suitable: very dark skin, or blonde, red, and grey hair. On very dark skin the light cannot safely tell hair from skin. On light hair there is not enough pigment for the light to grab.
